We are
We imagine futures and how to create them
A practice for strategic imagination in liminal times
We are living through a period of ruptures. The long arc of planetary crises is crashing into our present, the exponential growth of AI carries potential for radical disruption, war is spreading, and the old international order is splintering and giving way to something as yet unformed.
This is a time when we need not simply to defend and adapt, but to stand back and discern the future we want to build.
A defensive mindset can never get us where we need to go
Much of the work being done to pursue a more equitable, just, and peaceful world is organised in parallel silos that struggle to engage the interconnections between them. We are so focused on not losing ground that we struggle to imagine, let alone articulate, the future we want.
But this may be a moment of kairos — a time when deeper shifts and transformations become possible, if only we are able to imagine them and speak meaningfully into the moment.
We help philanthropy, governments, international organisations, and NGOs who are ready to step back from the immediate, think across boundaries, and ask what this moment truly demands.
A quiet rebellion against the shrinking of our imaginative horizons
The great challenges of our time are deeply interconnected.
Free Thought brings an interdisciplinary sensibility to this complexity — working across the boundaries between international relations, economics, human rights, peace, climate, technology, and the inner life — to widen the imaginative horizons in which better thinking and action become possible.
